How to measure railcar dwell

Measuring dwell means timestamping two events and taking the difference:

  1. Arrival or placement. When the car reaches the facility or is spotted for loading or unloading.
  2. Release or pull. When the car is finished and handed back to the railroad.

The gap between those two is dwell for that car. Average across cars and you have a facility dwell figure you can trend over weeks and months. The hard part is not the arithmetic. It is capturing the timestamps consistently, per car, when the day is busy and the switch list is changing.

How to reduce railcar dwell
