The first two digits are the major group — 01 farm products, 14 nonmetallic minerals, 28 chemicals, 33 primary metal products. Each added digit narrows it: 011 field crops, 0113 grain, 01132 corn. The full 7-digit code (assigned by Railinc and your serving railroad) pins down the exact commodity for rating; the 5-digit level shown here is what appears in industry waybill statistics and is almost always enough to start a rate conversation. ## When you'll be asked for one Any time a railroad prices or moves your freight: rate requests, service inquiries, waybills, and shipment instructions. The STCC system itself is maintained by Railinc/AAR; for official 7-digit assignments — especially hazardous materials — consult Railinc or your serving railroad. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is an STCC code? The Standard Transportation Commodity Code is the 7-digit numeric code North American railroads use to identify what's in a shipment. It drives rates, waybills, and equipment decisions. The first digits narrow the commodity: 2 digits for the major group (01 = farm products), then 3, 4, 5, and finally 7 digits for the exact commodity. ### Why does this tool show 5 digits instead of 7? The 2–5 digit hierarchy is published by the Surface Transportation Board and covers the commodity level used in waybill statistics. The full 7-digit assignments are maintained by Railinc (an AAR subsidiary) as a subscription publication — your serving railroad will confirm the exact 7-digit code when you set up a rate or shipment, and the 5-digit code gets you to the right conversation. ### What are the 48 and 49 series codes? 48xxx codes are hazardous waste and 49xxx codes are hazardous materials. A 49-series STCC embeds the hazard class and UN number of the commodity, and is assigned per 49 CFR 172.101 and the Railinc hazmat tariff. If you ship regulated material, get the code from your railroad or the current hazmat tariff — don't guess it. ### Where do I use an STCC code? Rate requests and quotes, waybills and EDI 404 shipment instructions, bills of lading, and railcar ordering. Railroads price by commodity, so the STCC is usually the first thing a rail rep asks for after origin and destination. ### Is STCC the same as a freight class or HS code? No. Trucking LTL uses NMFC freight classes, international trade uses HS codes, and US economic statistics use NAICS/SCTG. STCC is rail's own system.
