# How Many Bushels in a Railcar?

## The two ceilings

A covered hopper can be full two different ways, and which one comes first depends entirely on the crop.

A bushel occupies 1.2445 cubic feet, so a 5,161 ft³ car cubes out at about 4,147 bushels no matter what is in it. The weight ceiling moves: at 60 lb per bushel, a 222,000 lb load limit is reached at 3,700 bushels of wheat, while the same car takes nearly 3,964 bushels of corn at 56 lb and would take almost 7,000 bushels of oats at 32 lb — except it runs out of room at 4,147 first. Wheat weighs out. Oats cube out.

## Why the round numbers persist

“A hundred tons and thirty-five hundred bushels” has been the planning shorthand for decades, and it comes from the USDA’s jumbo hopper definition and the Army Corps’ modal comparison tables. It is still a fine estimate, but the fleet has moved underneath it: cars built today carry around 5,400 cubic feet against 4,550 a generation ago, weigh less, and are four feet shorter, so each one hauls roughly ten tonnes more grain than the car the rule of thumb was written for.

## What this means at the elevator

The conversion matters because the two sides of a transload speak different units. The farm and the elevator count bushels. The railroad bills tons and car-miles. The scale ticket reads pounds. A car that is short a few hundred bushels against the contract is either a load-out problem, a test-weight problem, or a measurement problem, and you cannot tell which from a bushel figure alone.

### How many bushels are in a railcar?

Roughly 3,500 to 4,000 bushels for a modern covered hopper, depending on the car's cube and the commodity's test weight. The long-standing USDA planning figure for a jumbo hopper is 3,500 bushels and 100 tons; newer 286,000 lb cars with 5,161 or 5,400 cubic feet hold closer to 4,000 bushels of corn or wheat.

### Why does the bushel count change by commodity?

Because a bushel is a volume and the car's limit is usually a weight. Corn and sorghum grade at 56 lb per bushel, soybeans and wheat at 60, barley at 48, oats at just 32. A weight-limited car therefore holds far fewer bushels of wheat than of oats, and oats are one of the few crops light enough to fill the cube before hitting the load limit.

### What does it mean for a car to weigh out or cube out?

Every car has two ceilings: the load limit stencilled on its side, and its cubic capacity. Dense commodities hit the weight limit with the car part empty — they weigh out. Light commodities fill the space first — they cube out. Builders size grain hoppers so the two land close together, which is why a covered hopper looks big next to a cement car.

### How many bushels are in a unit train?

A 110-car unit train carries roughly 366,000 to 403,000 bushels of soybeans depending on car size, or about 10,000 tons. The Army Corps' standard comparison puts a 100-car grain train at 350,000 bushels, a single barge at 122,500 bushels, and a hopper car at 3,500.

### How many trucks does one grain railcar replace?

About four. A legal bulk truck at 80,000 lb gross carries 22 to 25 tons of payload against roughly 100 tons in a covered hopper. That four-to-one ratio is the arithmetic behind transloading: rail the long haul, truck the last miles.

### Does test weight affect the answer?

Yes. Bushel weights are grading standards, not physics — actual weight moves with moisture and crop year, and a light test weight crop fills more volume for the same tonnage. Load to the stencilled limit on the car rather than to a calculated bushel count, and treat any figure here as a planning number.
